LG Electronics said Sunday that its vehicle communications control module had received the highest automotive functional safety rating, becoming the first in the industry to achieve the certification for the component.

The South Korean tech giant said the module earned Automotive Safety Integrity Level D certification under the ISO 26262 international standard from global testing and certification organization TUV Rheinland.

ISO 26262 sets safety requirements for electrical and electronic systems in vehicles to reduce risks arising from system failures. ASIL classifications range from A to D, with D representing the most stringent safety requirements.

LG's module connects electronic control units within a vehicle, transmitting operating data and control commands between components. It also links vehicles to external networks, enabling remote control functions and over-the-air software updates.

As the system handles safety-critical signals related to braking and steering, it must detect faults and respond safely to malfunctions.

LG said the module met ISO 26262 requirements across product design, software development and functional testing.

The certified component is installed in Genesis' GV90 flagship electric SUV. LG plans to expand its automotive communications business with global automakers following the certification.

The company has also deployed a 5G Release 16-based telematics solution in a European automaker's production model and developed an emergency call system supporting networks from 2G to 5G.

Last month, LG demonstrated a traffic safety platform combining vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications at the ITS World Congress in Gangneung.

"We will continue to advance functional safety technologies for automotive components, including vehicle communications control modules, a key technology in the transition to AI-defined vehicles," said Lee Sang-yong, vice president and head of LG Electronics' VS Research Institute.
